Country Music Hall of Fame Inductees Shafted?
November 21st 2007 04:38
Country singer Vince Gill, radio and television personality Ralph Emery, and comedian and singer Mel Tillis were this year inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Here is a little background on the three:
Vince Gill, 50, has recorded over twenty studio albums since 1979, and has had several hits including “When I Call Your Name,” “I Still Believe In You,” “The Heart Won’t Lie” and “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”. Gill is not only a vocalist, but a musician and entertainer.
Emery, now 74, not a performer but a broadcaster, has become the voice of country music since entering the business in 1957. Emery was a DJ on WSM (the station which broadcasts the Grand Ole Opry), as well as hosting shows Pop! Goes The Country and Nashville Now on the Nashville Network.
Mel Tillis, 75-years-old, received the lifetime achievement award and made a career out of his now infamous stutter. Tillis first came to the attention of Nashville after penning the classic "Detroit City" for Bobby Bare. Tillis’ biggest hits also the classics “I Ain't Never”, “Good Woman Blues”, and “Coca-Cola Cowboy”.
In 2007, Tillis, Emery and Gill were inducted during a private medallion ceremony at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Up until this year, each inductee were spotlighted during the CMA Awards.
However, this year, it seems that the ABC could find no time to show these three men the respect they deserve by being able to squeeze the spotlight in between The Eagles, Jamie Foxx or one of the two Rascal Flatts performances of the evening. What has happened?
The CMA Awards are known as the biggest night in country music, yet intead of paying tribute to three individuals who have established themselves as pillars within the Nashville community, we need to witness the return of The Eagles. I have one question: what does that have to do with country music? I cannot deny the impact that The Eagles have had on my own love of music (Hotel California is still euphoria to me), but I can’t understand how these three were not given the exposure they deserved.
To put it simply, I am confused.
