So, it’s that time of year. No, NOT Summer, NOT Winter, NOT Playoffs….it’s time for the new season of American Idol. Yes, I can shamefully admit that I am once again going to be willingly sucked into to what some view as glorified karaoke. Who cares? It's cheap entertainment. Now, as I anticipate the arrival of Wednesday night, I thought I would touch on what some of the former Idols are doing in country music. I guess I will start with the obvious, Miss Carrie Underwood.
Carrie Underwood…
Where do I begin? Um, Carrie has recorded two albums (“Some Hearts” and “Carnival Ride”), both have been uber-successful and have sold roughly around 9 million records world wide. She has taken home multiple ACM and CMA Awards, as well as two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist in 2007. Basically, at the moment, Carrie is the golden child of music city. “Before He Cheats” became the country cross over hit of 2007 and it looks like 2008 will follow suite.
Kelly Clarkson…
Okay, so, she hasn’t released a country record. However, her duet with Reba McEntire (a cover of her 2005 hit “Because Of You”) hit #2 on the Billboard Country Charts and has since been nominated for a Grammy as well as a CMA Awards. Beginning this month, Clarkson and Reba are also about to embark on the “2 Worlds, 2 Voices Tour” which is expected to reach an audience of over 200,000.
Kellie Pickler…
The Pickler, a finalist of season six was the first contestant out of the Class of 2006 to release a record on BNA. “Small Town Girl” has since been certified Gold and in the process she has also released two Top 20 hits, “Red High Heels” and “I Wonder”. Pickler was also a part of the highly successful “Bonfires & Amplifiers” tour, opening for Brad Paisley. Pickler’s defining moment for me was her performance of “I Wonder” at the 2007 CMA Awards…I highly recommend you guys check that video out on YouTube.
Bucky Covington….
Not to forget the boys. Bucky Covington was signed to Lyric Street Records in 2006 and subsequently released the Top 10 single “A Different World” which was followed by his debut record, “Bucky Covington” which debuted at number one on the Billboard Country albums chart. It has since gone on to sell over 300,000 copies.
Josh Gracin…
Josh Gracin released his debut record, aptly titled “Josh Gracin” in 2004 which has since been certified Gold. The record produced three top ten singles on the US Billboard Country chart, including the #1 hit, “Nothin’ To Lose”. His sophomore album however seems to be continually delayed.
Phil Stacey…
Um? Stacey aka The Creepy Bald Guy last week relaeased a single to country radio, “If You Didn’t Love Me” and has also joined Covington and Gracin on Lyric Street Records.
