Destructive Love Songs: Suggestions?
February 12th 2008 12:23
Now, even though this is a fact that often escapes the minds of my male friends, I am a girl. I am predominantly friendlier with the male population for multiple reasons: I like fast cars, I watch the cricket, prefer a Corona over a vodka and can even bounce a football. Is that uncommon? Apparently.
More than any of those things, I am a lover of music about any formation of despairing and destructive love. This was kindly brought up by one of my friends who commented on my odd appreciation for two Kelly Clarkson songs, “Addicted” and “Sober”. Songs that express this need and this kind of self destruction and consumption create unrealistic expectations about love and relationships...much like a Disney movie. But hey, I still fall for them every time.
Now I could pull out some Hank Williams or some Patsy Cline, but I'm not going to do that. I am going to avoid having any credibility with the world and list a few of my all time favorites. Why? I have no idea.
Case in point, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's "I Need you"...
One for fun? It's "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak...
The world was on fire
No one could save me but you.
Strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you
The Grandaddy of them all of me is [/insert drum roll here]....Garth Brooks' "The Red Strokes"...
Ah, but I did save the best for last...ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Kelly Clarkon's "Beautiful Disaster". Give her a chance...she may surprise you:
So, now I ask, have you any suggestions to add to my list?

I wanna drink that shot of whiskey
I wanna smoke that cigarette
I wanna smell that sweet addiction on my breath
I wanna ride across West Virginia in the back seat of a Cadillac
You know some cowboys like me go out like that
So I need you
Like a needle needs a vein
Like my uncle Joe in Oklahoma needs the rain
And I need you
Like a lighthouse on the coast
Like the father and the son need the Holy Ghost
I need you
I wanna smoke that cigarette
I wanna smell that sweet addiction on my breath
I wanna ride across West Virginia in the back seat of a Cadillac

Moonlight on canvas, midnight and wine
Two shadows starting to softly combine
The picture they're painting
Is one of the heart
And to those who have seen it
It's a true work of art
Oh, the red strokes
Passions uncaged
Thundering moments of tenderness rage
Oh, the red strokes
Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)
Burning the night like the dawn
Steam on the window, salt in a kiss
Two hearts have never pounded like this
Inspired by a vision
That they can't command
Erasing the borders
With each brush of a hand
Two shadows starting to softly combine
The picture they're painting
Is one of the heart
And to those who have seen it
It's a true work of art
Oh, the red strokes
