This morning I picked up Garth Brooks’ The Ultimate Hits and I was pleasantly surprised. I have always appreciated Brooks as a vocalist and now I can only hope that one day I will bare witness to one his legendary concerts, but in all honesty, I have never invested a lot of time in Brooks.
The Ultimate Hits is a testimony to over a decade of hits that Brooks consistently rolled out. Ranging from the duet with his now wife Trisha Yearwood (“In Another’s Eyes”) to the signature “Friends In Low Places”, it is not difficult to comprehend why you will struggle to find a country fan that does not either respect or revere Brooks in some way.
Brooks’ latest single “More Than A Memory” is not the kind of song that cemented Brooks’ place in country music history. The track is lyrically and melodically run of the mill. However, what “More Than A Memory” lacks in distinctive content is made up for in the vocal interpretation. Brooks’ vocal is both resolute and passionate, allowing one can understand how this track befits a radio hit and the distinguished honour of being the only song in Billboard history to debut at the number one spot.
The tracks in The Ultimate Hits were hand picked by Brooks himself and each track has a video to match on the DVD video collection, which is another excellent motive for adding this set to any collection. With thirty-three songs (including four new tracks), The Ultimate Hits in essence defines the phrase ‘bang for your buck’.
With that said, if you have never delved into the world of Garth Brooks, this is a great first step.
