Hank III - dig his shit.

Someone asked my to make a recommendation for some left of centre country music. So, I am going to share with you guys one of my favorite performers alive today...Hank III.
Hank Williams III, son of Jr, grandson of Hank Williams, sometimes known as Hank III or III is a traditional country singer, crossed with elements of heavy metal and punk rock...and even hellbilly. He hauntingly looks like his Grandaddy but has kicked the Nashville sound up the behind, resenting its apparent predictability and constraints. Thus trading it in for the kind of sound that has not only garnered him a cult following but has also turned many former Nashville listeners into alt. country fans (well, me at least). His disdain of Nashville? You need look no further than the song "Trashville" from his Lovesick, Broke and Driftin' (2002) album.
III divides his live shows between country, hellbilly and punk-esque Assjack. However, his most recent offering, Straight To Hell (2006) (that was recorded at home on a portable studio mostly) deliver a countrified record. As much as he tries to lash out at Nashville and against the confines of country music, this dirty red neck sound works within the genre that he is pitting himself against.
Here's a little of Hank III. This is one of my favorite tracks, "Country Heroes":
