How early is too early? Pre-mature best of.

I was discussing Dierks Bentley with a friend yesterday after listening to "Sweet and Wild" (his duet with Sarah Buxton off his greatest hits album, Greatest Hits/Every Mile a Memory 2003-2008) in my car. My friend then proceeded to asked me how many albums he had released (non-independent). The answer of course is three: Dierks Bentley, Modern Day Drifter and Long Trip Alone. They then highlighted the notion that the aforementioned compilation may be slightly pre-mature after only five years of charting singles. It then occurred to me that Tim McGraw is about to release his third greatest hits album only two years (and one album) after his second volume released back in 2006. Is it Curb Records milking it's cash cow or is it simply a distraction in between records?
On the flip-side, some bands such as Radiohead essentially refused to to release a compilation album and one only surfaced upon their exodus from Parlophone back in 2005.
As I take a break from my Prison Break marathon, I ponder: how early is too early for one to release a greatest hits record?
