My Pick for 2007's Country Album of the Year:
December 29th 2007 03:57
In recent weeks, I have received a few emails regarding the question of my favourite record of 2007. To be honest, that is unquestionably a tough question to answer. I am torn between a few choices ranging from Josh Turner to Trisha Yearwood. However, I am basing my pick solely on my listening pleasure. With that said, it would have to be Miranda Lambert's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
What this album delivers is a departure from the outlaw-esque theme of Gretchen Wilson and permits itself to toe the fine line between pressing the limits of country radio whilst staying with the invisible boundaries that Music City has created. I am definitely making a major statement in assessing Lambert as a younger Loretta Lynn but I guess that is very much a discussion for a later post.
So, back the album.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend certainly picks up where Kerosene left off with aggressive and raucous title track "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" and "Gunpowder & Lead". Lambert also offers an intimate and more vulnerable side to her apparent hard exterior in tracks such as "More Like Her" and "Desperation" and explores different themes, from the maudlin "Love Letters" to Southern rock tinged Gillian Welch cover, "Dry Town". The three covers on the record (including Patty Griffin’s "Getting Ready") demonstrate the kind of broad album that Lambert is able to convey whilst not creating a split, confusing and almost haphazard song selection that I feel has plagued the last two Carrie Underwood albums.
Lambert, a former contestant on the freshman season of Nashville Star is an ideal melding of contemporary edge and traditional country. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an advanced step forward from Kerosene as two more years of experience and perception delivered an amazing record.
Key Tracks: "More Like Her", "Gunpowder & Lead", "Dry Town", "Desperation", "Guilty In Here".
