Prediction: CMA Single Of The Year
September 22nd 2008 08:05
Nominees:
“Don’t Blink” - Kenny Chesney
“Gunpowder & Lead” - Miranda Lambert
“I Saw God Today” - George Strait
“Stay” - Sugarland
“You’re Gonna Miss This” - Trace Adkins
This category is offering up some stiff competition (unlike the sadly predictable Album of The Year category) with some solid offerings from Trace Adkins (his first nomination in a decade), Chesney, Strait, Miranda Lambert and Sugarland.
My prediction however is that this category will boil down to two songs: Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead" and Sugarland's "Stay".
"Stay", for me at least, defines everything great about country music. It is a track that connected with so many people on a number of different levels. It is also notable for being the song that essentially pushed Jennifer Nettles and Kristian out of this stratosphere.
On the other hand, "Gunpowder & Lead", (the highest charting single that Lambert has ever released) is an amazing cut off an album that was ineligible for Album Of The Year due to a date technicality. "Gunpowder & Lead" also contributed to creating an ideal public sphere, once again bringing the issue of domestic abuse into the public dialogue...and oh, it's also an extraordinary song.
My Pick: Miranda Lambert - "Gunpowder & Lead"
