Review: Emerson Drive - Belongs To You
November 4th 2008 10:46
Canadian natives Emerson Drive broke back on the US country scene with their 2007 smash "Moments". This time, after signing with Scott Borchetta's Valory label, they are back with "Belongs To You" . The track (co-written by Moments writer Dave Berg), was previously recorded by resident emo-country crooner Jimmy Wayne and was unceremoniously dropped. After hearing this, one can understand why.
"Belongs To You" offers watered down production and sadly lacks the distinction of Emerson Drive's previous work. What is also working against "Belongs To You" is it's excess of rolling lyrical cliches. Case in point: "Every smile that lights my face/Every tear drop every trace/Every secret hidden place/Belongs to you/Anything that's good in me/All I ever hope to be/Every drop of every dream/Belongs to you". The song is also not very helpful in offering safe padding for the less than, um, extraordinary (but pleasant and technically sound) vocals of lead singer Brad Mates.
With that being said, "Belongs To You" is one of those songs that could be sung by any Nashville talent and could be pushed as a hit. Thus, if this track is serviced to radio properly, the boys from Canada could gave another potential hit on their hands.
