Review: Kellie Pickler - Best Days Of Your Life
November 13th 2008 12:07
Kellie Pickler debuted her lead single “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” at the 2008 ACM Awards. While it peaked at #21 on the country charts, it would be fair to say that expectations were a little higher. Fast-forward five months and Pickler is back, this time armed with some sweet sugary pop country. Co-written with friend and former Paisley tour mate Taylor Swift, “Best Days Of Your Life” is the track that may perhaps clarify whether Pickler is destined to crack the top ten and live up to the media hype that persistently surrounds her. With a strong melody, slick pop production and Taylor Swift attached to the project; this is the single that should lift her self-titled album out of chart obscurity.
The track follows the trend of Taylor Swift's "Picture To Burn" and Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats". It is well constructed and bleeds of vengeance, as well as the realization that he will never truly move on from her, as Pickler (joined by Swift on backing vocals) proclaims: "'Cos I'll be there, in the back of your mind/From the day we met to the very last night/And it's just too bad, you've already had the best days/The best days of you life."
With that said, “Best Days Of Your Life” is essentially a pop song with country leanings; however, Pickler’s vocals bring it back from the edge of the pop country spectrum. Arguably, if radio doesn’t embrace this single (Pickler’s strongest single offering to date, only behind “I Wonder”), then it might be fair to speculate that Pickler will continue to dwell on the cusp of the Nashville elite for a long time to come.
