Sometimes you've just got to do what Tim McGraw says...

While attempting to write a paper of South East Asian religious fundamentalism, my iTunes as usual was set to shuffle. For roughly two hours, I tuned in and out to the music of Johnny Cash, NWA, Mötley Crüe and many many more. Then, suddenly, Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying" came on, and my typing arrived at a halt. I had one of those rare moments where you hear a much loved song for the first time in a long period, and for a moment, when hearing it, there is absolute clarity.
"Live Like You Were Dying" is the title track from Tim McGraw's 2004 record, Live like You Were Dying. The song itself, written by Craig Wiseman and Tim Nichols relays the story of a man who is at the peak of his life, in his early forties, who discovers he is suffering from a potentially life ending disease. Upon learning this news, he proceeds to do all the things he has never had the time or energy to do. Aptly put:
"I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,
"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,
"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."
An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,
"To live like you were dyin'."
I don't feel like I'm wasting my life away, nor do I feel like I'm letting it pass me by. However, every now and then, it is necessary to have a minor reminder that sometimes, when you're going through the motions every day, you need kick past the mediocrity and go for it. It's damn corny and clichéd, but too often, I myself at least, forget that opportunities to do so are few and far between.
